Job summary

Minnesota State Academies seeks two MSAD Special Teachers-Elementary Education to design and deliver instructional programs for deaf/hard of hearing students. Candidates must hold a Deaf/hard of hearing Minnesota teaching license and demonstrate fluency in American Sign Language.

Positions are ten months per year, following the school calendar, with 3 weeks in July for summer school. Day shift, Monday through Friday, 7:30am–4pm, located in Faribault.

Qualifications

  • Must possess valid Deaf/hard of hearing Minnesota Teacher license or ability to obtain before start date.
  • Knowledge of deaf/hard of hearing and deaf/blind students and educational practices.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language.
  • Ability to read and write English well enough to follow policies and education plans and maintain records.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to design and delivery of academic instructional programs for deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind students.
  • Provide educational instruction using varied techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.
  • Signing skills will be assessed prior to hire.

This announcement will be used to fill 2 Special Teacher-Elementary Education positions at the MN State Academy for the Deaf.

This is a ten month per year position; the work schedule follows the school calendar and includes 3 weeks in July for the summer school program.

  • Under general supervision, contributes to the design and delivery of academic instructional programs to deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind students. Provides educational instruction and uses a variety of techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.

Positions at MN State Academy for the Deaf require American Sign Language (ASL) skills. Candidates will be assessed for signing skills prior to hire.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must possess a valid Deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) Minnesota Teacher license or have the ability to obtain one prior to the start date
  • Knowledge of the deaf/hard of hearing and deaf/blind students and educational practices
  • Skill in writing basic reports, using arithmetic, and reading and interpreting charts and graphs
  • Fluency in American Sign Language
  • Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand written policies and procedures and education plans and to maintain records and documentation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of curriculum, language acquisition and educational best practices as it relates to deaf/hard of hearing students and/or deaf/blind students.
  • Experience working with deaf/hard of hearing students
  • Demonstration of advanced sign skills
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (with assistance) and be able to sit, stand and walk throughout the workday
Additional Requirements
  • Employment is contingent upon a successful criminal background check within the past 12 months
