Job summary

The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is hiring a Motor Equipment Operator I to perform a variety of tasks in the Stormwater Maintenance division. Responsibilities include operating dump trucks, light trucks, and backhoes, and performing manual drainage work.

Minimum qualifications include a 10th grade education plus 1 year of relevant experience and a valid driver’s license. A pre-employment physical is required; CDL is mandatory with a $4,000 hiring bonus, paid in increments

Qualifications

  • Requires completion of tenth (10th) grade, plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
  • Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams.
  • Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including termination.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a dump truck in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel, and supplies.
  • Operate a light truck in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies, to and from the job site.
  • Operate a motor truck engaged in snow removal or sanding of icy streets and roads.
  • Operate a dump truck and/or backhoe in making ditch repairs.
  • Operate a Ditch Master.
  • Service and perform minor repairs on automotive equipment, including, but not limited to, excavator, front-end loader, and backhoe.
  • Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.
  • Work by hand when cleaning drainage structures, pipes, ditches, removing debris, cutting down trees, and shoveling sediment.
  • Familiar with the Miss Utility process and/or utility line processes.
  • Other duties as demanded by those duties described.
