Job summary

The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is seeking a Traffic Signs Markings Mechanic II to support the Traffic Management Operations group. You will safely operate heavy signs and marking equipment, install and maintain highway signs and roadway markings, and assist with work zone traffic control during events.

Apply now to join an organization where you truly make a difference.Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently hiring a Traffic Signs Markings Mechanic II to work in the Traffic Management Operations group.Duties:Safely operate equipment such as Stake Body, Thermoplastic Truck, Thermoplastic Long Liner Truck, and Crash Truck.Complete Pre-Check and Post-Check operations, and minor equipment adjustments to In-House Light Equipment.Installation and maintenance of City highway traffic signs.Installation and maintenance of roadway pavement markings and roadway pre-marking to prepare the area for painting.Installation and maintenance of work zone traffic control devices used for emergency detours and provide traffic control support during large Special Events.Fabrication of highway traffic signs using specialized equipment and machines.Assist in maintaining inventory of material supplies.Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, as well as to provide clear instructions to subordinates.Ability to work in extreme heat and coldAbility to complete daily reports and compute material quantities for the jobAbility to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs.Ensure subordinates comply with applicable safety measuresComplete daily logs and work orders in a work management database.Direct the work of the field crew in the absence of the maintenance supervisor.Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as deemed by those duties described or less. Must have a current and valid drivers license. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. A valid Commercial drivers license (CDL) may be required. This position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing.
