Job summary

UW Medicine is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee/1 to join the Division of Infectious Disease Diagnostics at the Renton Central Laboratory. The role entails performing a broad spectrum of clinical infectious disease testing across microbiology, virology, molecular diagnostics, and more to support patient care.

You will work a 100% FTE night shift (Sunday-Thursday with rotating holidays), following established procedures and quality standards, while contributing to assay development,

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent education/experience.
• Eligibility to take ASCP certification within 18 months from date of hire.

Responsibilities

• Perform infectious disease diagnostic testing following procedures and quality standards.
• Prepare and report stains and smears (Gram, KOH, Pneumocystis DFA, acridine orange, Kinyoun, Wright/Giemsa).
• Conduct routine microbiology tests for bacteria, yeast, and parasites.
• Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing (disk diffusion, Etest, MIC).
• Carry out serological and molecular tests (latex agglutination, EIA, PCR).
• Operate a range of lab instruments and safety cabinets.
• Record, interpret, and communicate test results to clinicians and staff.
• Assist with method development, troubleshooting, and workflow improvements.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science

ASCP certification eligibility within 18 months of hire

Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification or equivalent (MLS 1)
