Job summary

UW Medicine’s Molecular Microbiology Team in the Central Lab, Renton, seeks a MLS Trainee/1 to perform PCR testing, DNA extraction, and sequencing reactions, while supporting MLS staff and students. The role emphasizes accuracy, data entry in the LIMS, and collaboration with hospital staff.

Requirements include an accredited B.S. in MLS or equivalent and eligibility to take the ASCP MLS exam within 18 months. MLS 1 requires current ASCP certification and at least one year of MLS experience.

Qualifications

• Accredited bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent education/experience.
• Ability to obtain ASCP certification within 18 months of hire (MLS Trainee) or hold current MLS certification (MLS 1).
• One year of MLS experience for MLS 1 or equivalent externship experience may count toward requirements.

Responsibilities

• Performs PCR tests for identification of bacteria, yeast and parasites per laboratory protocols.
• Performs DNA extraction and sets up PCR, real-time PCR and sequencing reactions; operates molecular equipment.
• Uses laboratory information system and molecular databases to enter data and prepare case reports.
• Maintains quality control, follows policies for reporting results to medical staff and epidemiology.
• Instructs new staff, students and residents; participates in continuing education and CAP proficiency surveys.

Education

Accredited bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science OR equivalent education/experience

Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the ASCP or equivalent
