Job summary

The University of Iowa in Iowa City seeks an MLS Supervisor (Clinical Care/Specialized Services Supervisor) to ensure smooth operation of a clinical laboratory unit or shift. You will oversee analyses of patient specimens, supervise staff, and maintain regulatory standards.

This 100%-time, first shift role involves leading bench teams, communicating project status, and acting as the technical expert for test interpretation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
• At least 4 years clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years is required.
• At least 2 years of experience with high complexity testing is required.
• At least 1 year of experience performing testing using molecular pathology methods is required.
• Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successfully leading teams/groups in projects, work assignments, policy updates, etc. is required.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a primary in-house supervisory staff member for assigned section and in Core Services.
• Communicate project statuses to appropriate others and manage customer expectations effectively.
• Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical and research specimens.
• Serve as the technical expert for patient test result interpretation, specific tasks, work processes and procedures performed in a unit/shift.
• Perform assigned bench duties regularly and maintain technical competency on designated benches.
• Provide direct supervision of assigned personnel.
