Job summary

The University of Minnesota’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Program seeks an Academic Advisor to support CLA students on the East Bank campus. In-person advising will be primary, with some remote work during breaks as determined by the supervisor.

The role requires strong interpersonal and intercultural skills, a commitment to equity and social justice, and the ability to guide students through majors, career paths, and engagement opportunities within a liberal arts framework.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree plus at least two years of relevant advising work experience, or master's degree.
  • Level 3: BA/BS degree plus at least four years of advising or higher education experience, or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience.
  • Level 4: BA/BS degree plus at least five years of relevant academic advising work experience, or master's degree plus at least three years of academic advising work experience.
  • Capacity to articulate the nature and advantages of a liberal arts education
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a professional advising caseload of CLA students (with a mix of students in all four years of progress, and in a variety of majors/minors).
  • Apply theories from higher education literature to provide appropriate challenge and support to each student and to facilitate their academic experience.
  • Incorporate interpersonal, intercultural, communication, and equity-mindedness skills to build rapport with students.
  • Demonstrate and advance the value of a liberal arts education and explain curriculum, degree requirements, and engagement options.
  • Encourage students to use the college's and university's support resources.
  • Conduct outreach and develop strategies to support retention and degree progress.
  • Review student records to certify academic standing and progression.
  • Uphold academic and curricular policies and apply exceptions when warranted.
  • Engage with diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice initiatives and events.
