Job summary

Expedia Group is offering a Global Summer Internship Program as an Applied Science Intern in San Jose. You will contribute to ML model development, prototyping, and data analysis while gaining exposure to real business priorities and senior leaders.

Successful candidates will work with ML pipelines and collaborate with engineers, data scientists, and product partners, with mentorship and a strong support network from Emerging Talent & Careers.

Qualifications

• Must commit to full program dates and relocation if needed.
• Must be graduating with a PhD in a technical subject between Dec 2027 and July 2028.
• Must relocate to the city of job location if outside commuting distance.
• Must have Python and/or Scala, SQL knowledge.
• Must graduate from university in the same country as internship location.
• Helpful to have knowledge of ML topics like Regression, Naïve Bayes, Deep Learning, Gradient Boosting, Random Forests, SVMs, Neural Networks.
• Helpful to have experience with Python, R, SQL/Hive, Java.
• Helpful to have understanding of distributed file systems and Hadoop/Spark/Hive; MapReduce, in-memory data processing.
• Helpful to be familiar with AWS in distributed computing context.
• Helpful to communicate with partners; also helpful to have Java, R, C++, Hive, Hadoop, MSSQL knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Design, prototype, and evaluate ML models under supervision, contributing to research and product experiments.
• Implement clean model training and inference code with basic testing and reproducible workflows.
• Participate in system, API, and data modeling for ML-powered features.
• Explore, analyze, and prepare data with statistics and ML techniques to improve model quality.
• Collaborate with peers, data scientists, engineers, and product partners to define success metrics.
• Learn to work with AI-driven systems and safely apply AI/ML concepts to real-world products.
