Job summary

California Water Service Group (Cal Water) invites you to join as a Meter Reader in Rio Communities, NM. You will read water meters, record consumption, and assist in accurate billing while working in diverse neighborhoods and weather conditions.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, at least 1 year in a water facility, proficiency with Microsoft Office, and a valid New Mexico driver license. On-call duties including evenings and weekends may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• One year experience in a water facility preferred.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
• Available for call-outs evenings, weekends and holidays and rotating on-call duty.
• Must reside within 60 minutes of the NMWSC office or assigned service area.
• Valid New Mexico Driver License.

Responsibilities

• Reads water meters in an assigned area using a handheld device in varied neighborhoods and weather conditions.
• Records meter readings and compares current readings with prior readings for accuracy.
• Inspects water services for tampering or issues; reports changes to meters or readings.
• Completes and distributes door hangers informing customers of impending disconnections or work.
• Answers customer questions regarding meter readings, billing, or consumption; referrals as needed.
• Repairs or replaces damaged meters and clears around meter boxes; reports hazards.
• Disconnects services for non-payment and reconnects as part of collection procedures.
• Supports Continuous Improvement programs and processes.
• Performs on-site work at the assigned office location.

The Meter Reader is responsible for reading water meters in an assigned area; records water consumption for a given period and collects water billings; detects and reports damaged or unusual meter conditions and readings. This position is located in Rio Communities, NM.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Reads water meters in an assigned area using a handheld device, in varied neighborhoods and terrains, and in all weather conditions

• Records meter readings, compares the current reading with prior readings to determine accuracy and appropriateness of reading and reports any unusual conditions

• Inspects water services and plumbing systems as directed for tampering or cross connections; checks for inoperative, defaced, or bypassed meters; reports any street, house, or meter number changes

• Completes forms (door hangers) and distributes them to inform customers of impending disconnections or work taking place

• Communicates with customers in the field answering questions regarding meter reading, customer billing, or consumption; refers the customer to the proper company contact if additional information is requested

• Repairs and/or replaces damaged meters, digs and trims around meter boxes clearing of any vegetation or foliage, reports street leaks or unsafe conditions and other hazards associated with meters and water pipes or pump houses

• As instructed, disconnects services for non-payment and reconnects services in connection with collection procedures and conducts rereads

• Participates in and supports the Company’s Continuous Improvement program and processes

• Performs work on-site in the assigned office location

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform other duties as assigned in order to fulfill business operational needs and Company objectives. Attend meetings and training as directed by NMWSC

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or possession of a GED

• One year experience in a water facility desired

• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications

• Must be available for call-outs evenings, weekends and holidays and rotating on-call duty

• Must reside within 60 minutes of the NMWSC office or assigned service area

• Valid New Mexico Driver License

Salary Range: $18.99 - $33.46
