Job summary

ATI is seeking a Research and Development Intern for Summer 2027 at our Natrona Heights Operations. You will support engineering and technical teams in a heavy industrial metals environment, assisting with laboratory testing, material analysis, and continuous improvement projects.

The role is designed for students pursuing Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in an accredited 4-year college pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field.
• Prior lab, manufacturing, or research experience preferred but not required.
• Strong interest in metals manufacturing, materials processing, product development, or industrial research.

Responsibilities

• Support R&D projects related to metals processing, alloy development, heat treatment, melting, rolling, finishing, or product performance.
• Conduct laboratory testing and analysis of materials across stages.
• Assist with sample prep, chemical analysis, mechanical testing, and data collection.
• Analyze test results to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
• Assist investigations related to product quality, process variation, or customer requirements.
• Collaborate with engineers, metallurgists, chemists, and operations staff to evaluate changes and solutions.
• Document experiments, test procedures, and findings for project records.
• Participate in plant trials, process audits, and production support activities as needed.
• Follow safety procedures and environmental requirements in labs and plant environments.
• Present project findings to technical and management teams.
