Job summary

American Express is seeking a Senior Manager within the Global Merchant Network Services (GMNS) Risk Management team to oversee a portfolio of major merchant exposures and protect merchant business P&L. You will balance risk and relationships, negotiate with C-suite executives, and translate complex data into executive-ready insights.

The role requires sound judgment, strong communication and analytical abilities, and ability to collaborate across GMNS and Risk organizations.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of commercial credit risk management experience.
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively amid changing priorities.
• Navigate high-pressure, urgent, complex situations and balance stakeholder needs.
• Build relationships and communicate effectively to develop practical business solutions.
• Manage a sizeable client portfolio with discipline and urgency.
• MBA, relevant certification, or equivalent preferred.
• Experience in merchant-acquiring risk, client management, or commercial credit underwriting across multiple industries preferred.
• Experience presenting complex credit metrics to C-suite stakeholders preferred.
• Project management experience and cross-unit collaboration preferred.
• Strong financial and analytical acumen, including knowledge of credit and/or accounting and proficiency in interpreting financial statements.

Responsibilities

• Independently manage a sizeable portfolio of large merchant clients and identify exposures and mitigation strategies.
• Prioritize higher-risk merchants representing billions in credit exposure and set action timelines.
• Collaborate with internal partners to obtain financial information, prepare review cases, support escalations, and make risk decisions.
• Lead negotiations with merchant CEOs, CFOs, and other C-suite executives and align internal stakeholders.
• Negotiate card acceptance agreements with Client Management, GCO, and others.
• Advise internal stakeholders on best practices and portfolio risks.
• Demonstrate influencing and negotiation skills with Ameican Express leadership and merchant executives.
• Transform large data sets into meaningful executive-ready reports.
• Complete ad hoc risk-mitigation assignments across the GMNS portfolio.
• Work independently or with GMNS Risk colleagues on process and controls improvements.
