Position Purpose: The Mentoring Specialist (MS) role at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh is to mentor students in an embedded school-based setting.
Success of Position: The Mentoring Specialist will develop and facilitate both group and individual programming using curriculum focused on reducing risky behaviors, building social-emotional skills, fostering a sense belonging, and helping students envision a successful future. The MS will ensure programming is delivered effectively, consistently, and in alignment with organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Mentorship and Program Facilitation: Lead weekly group and one-on-one mentoring sessions using a structured curriculum, while fostering positive relationships and a safe, supportive environment.
- Recruitment and Enrollment: Assist with recruitment and enrollment of Littles during the school year and summertime - including interviews and assessments to recommend group or individual mentoring placements.
- Data and Program Monitoring: Utilize student data around behavior, attendance, academics, and surveys to improve programming quality.
- Collaboration and Communication: Communicate with families, school staff, and program teams, integrate into the school environment, and help maintain engagement.
- Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate and timely records with strict adherence to child safety protocols and risk assessment procedures, ensuring compliance with BBBS standards and funding requirements.
- Operate within the bounds of BBBSPGH and BBBSA expectations and standards.

- Recruit identified number of students at the school for the program

- Engage with MC in Big Match Support Contacts and surveys, as required by BBBSA Standards of Practice
- Collaboration & Communication
- Participate in ongoing meetings with school contacts
- Documentation and Compliance
- Follow standard practices of communication cadences and timelines
- Ensure data accuracy in Matchforce
Qualifications and Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to social work, counseling, social services, child development, or education
- Associate's degree and at least 2 years of relevant work experience in social work, counseling, social services, child development, or education
- High School Diploma with a minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience in social work, counseling, social services, child development, or education
- Previous experience working in a school setting preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Working knowledge of a customer relations management (CRM) system a plus; Salesforce preferred
Other Requirements
- Must pass required background checks (Child Abuse, Criminal, and FBI)
- Regular hours Monday through Friday, aligning with school hours
- Attendance at BBBSPGH headquarters (East Liberty) required when school is not in session and as needed
Physical Demands
- This position is primarily school-based; attendance at BBBSPGH headquarters (East Liberty) is required when school is not in session
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position approximately 25% of the time
- Must be able to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery (e.g., printer, copy machine)
- Must be able to communicate information and ideas clearly and accurately so others will understand
- Regular hours are Monday through Friday, aligning with school hours
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $39,000.00 – $42,000.00 per year
