The Mental Health Technician (MHT) supports nursing staff in maintaining a therapeutic environment by performing routine tasks and patient care activities within their training and experience scope. The MHT ensures safe and professional patient care in accordance with Joint Commission, Federal, State regulations, Oceans' Mission, policies, procedures, and performance standards.

Essential Functions:
  • Adhere to professional standards, policies, procedures, and comply with federal, state, and local requirements, including Joint Commission standards.
  • Apply supportive behavior to assist in controlling patients exhibiting unacceptable behavior; employ de-escalation and therapeutic interventions as needed.
  • Inventory patient belongings accurately and secure contraband; perform unit safety checks.
  • Follow infection control policies, standard/universal precautions, and attend required in-services.
  • Assist with patient care activities under licensed nursing supervision: perform vital signs, weights, ADLs, intake/output, nutritional monitoring, and communicate findings to nurses. Review dietary restrictions, allergies, and preferences to ensure appropriate diet.
  • Help patients with laundry, meals, bathroom functions, and belongings; assist at-risk or physically challenged patients with mobility needs.
  • Customize patient care activities to age, disability, and cultural needs.
  • Document patient observations and data accurately in records; record patient departures, significant occurrences, behavior, vital signs, and nutrition with 100% accuracy and timeliness.
  • Communicate task outcomes and follow-up needs to nursing staff promptly; ensure continuity of care.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent with CNA certification or at least 6 months of direct patient care experience in healthcare.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to work well with diverse populations using age, disability, and cultural knowledge.
  • Good physical and mental health, demonstrated by empathetic attitude, respect, integrity.
  • Ability to work under close supervision.
  • Successful completion of CPR certification and Oceans-approved behavioral de-escalation program.

This role involves frequent interruptions, high-paced and stressful environments, and exposure to odors, sights, and unpredictable patient behavior. Work is primarily indoors, with temperature variations possible.
