Job description

At Oceans Behavioral Hospital, we understand the importance of trusting someone with your behavioral health needs. We are passionate about helping individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, behavioral changes related to Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, medication management, substance abuse, and other mental health issues.

The Mental Health Technician (MHT) supports nursing staff by performing routine tasks and patient care activities within their training and experience. The MHT maintains a safe, professional standard of care in accordance with Joint Commission, federal, state regulations, Oceans' policies, and performance standards.

Essential Functions:

1. Follow professional standards, policies, procedures, and comply with federal, state, and local requirements, including Joint Commission standards.
2. Use supportive behavior to assist in managing patients exhibiting unacceptable behavior; employ de-escalation and therapeutic interventions as needed.
3. Accurately inventory patient belongings and secure contraband; perform safety checks.
4. Adhere to infection control policies and universal precautions; attend required training sessions.
5. Assist with patient care activities under licensed nursing supervision, including vital signs, weights, ADLs, intake/output documentation, nutritional monitoring, and communicating findings to nurses. Ensure patients receive appropriate diets considering restrictions, allergies, and preferences.
6. Help patients with laundry, meals, bathroom functions, and maintaining belongings; assist at-risk or physically challenged patients with mobility needs.
7. Customize patient care activities to meet age, disability, and cultural needs.
8. Document patient observations and data accurately in records; record patient departures (e.g., passes, appointments) precisely and promptly; note significant events, behavior, vital signs, nutrition, and observations as requested.
9. Communicate task outcomes and follow-up needs to nursing staff promptly; report ongoing activities and current patient needs to ensure continuity of care.
10. Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.
