Qualifications

Responsibilities

Position Overview:

The Membership Director is responsible for building relationships to increase membership interactions, engagement and growth. The main objective of the Membership Director is to ensure that GDCC members are appropriately and effectively served to achieve high levels of satisfaction resulting in a high retention rate. The Membership Director leads the overall organizational objective of growing GDCC membership and engagement.

Overall Membership Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement an overall strategy and plan for Membership development based on engagement, recruitment, and retention in order to increase membership satisfaction and significantly enlarge the membership base.
  • Develop goals and action plans with the President for membership development and retention, including corporate sponsorships and advertising.
  • Provide analysis of existing member benefits, materials and programs and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Develop strategic plans for improving member benefits, materials, and programs.
  • Research, develop and implement strategies for increasing non membership revenue.
  • Develop the necessary membership/sponsorship recruitment materials.
  • Initiate internal/external communications, including providing newsletter content, email blasts, event announcements, member benefit reminders, etc.
  • Provide excellent customer service to existing members and institute regular relationship building mechanisms with prospective members and partner organizations.
  • Record overall member relationships (benefits used, event participation, etc.) in ChamberMaster. Ensure membership and sponsorship are accurately acknowledged and reported.
  • Respond promptly to inquiries from prospective and current members.
  • Create and update membership and marketing materials, including renewal letters, welcome packets, information sheets and surveys.
  • Ensure high public profile of Chamber through promotion of member features, testimonials, stories, and feature placements in Chamber communications.
  • Ensure Chamber sponsors, directors, members, and volunteers are recognized appropriately in all Chamber communications.
  • Develop a recruitment plan to support the objective of significantly growing the membership base.
  • Research potential members and contact/visit them accordingly.
  • Cultivate relationships with potential members.
  • Develop creative membership recruiting techniques and tools
  • Present annual new member and retention goals to the President.
Engage
  • Maintain strong working relationships with members to increase interactions and encourage their participation in programs and events, including frequent in-person contact as well as phone, e-mail, and other official communications.
  • Oversee the delivery of welcome/on-boarding services to members.
  • Coordinate and promote members’ participation in the various membership platforms such as the Member Information Center, chamber communications and networking programs.
  • Oversee the scheduling, organization, and set up of business programs.
  • Understand members’ needs and priorities to update and maximize the CM database.
  • Maintain close collaboration with all GDCC staff members to develop and drive the GDCC membership strategy in line with the organization’s priorities.
  • Institute a checklist for new members and track the progress of the checklist.
Retain
  • Implement membership processes, including managing incoming new member applications, invoices, and communication.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to the Ambassadors Committee.
  • Work with the Ambassador Committee Chair to select and train new ambassadors.
  • Recommend and develop feasible and profitable new member services, programs, and benefits as needed.
  • Work with the entire chamber staff team on events as needed.
Current Programs, Services & Events under the Leadership of this position:
  • Ambassadors Committee (monthly)
  • Business Open Houses (monthly)
  • Leveraging the Chamber (quarterly)
  • Local Expert Series (up to six sessions throughout the year)
  • Smart Business Series (as needed, not to exceed six per year)
Qualifications and Experience Required
  • BA/BS with 3-5 years of membership and/or business program development
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • 2-3 years of experience working directly in the chamber of commerce or other membership organization industry preferred
  • Effective public speaker
  • Ability to establish strong partnerships and build collaborative efforts
  • Organized with ability to multi-task in fast paced environment
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • IT proficiency – Microsoft Office software, website content management, database systems, Constant Contact, Canva
  • Positive ‘can do’ attitude
  • Must have own reliable transportation and valid driver license

The Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce offers a supportive and engaged work environment that values and encourages creativity and personal growth. Our headquarters is located at 550 Central Avenue in Dover. Some early and late hours may be necessary.

Accountability & Evaluation:

This position reports to the President.

The following key performance indicators will be used to evaluate performance:

  • Percentage of new member growth
  • Percentage of renewals growth
  • Percentage of growth in sponsorship income
  • Percentage of growth in business program participation
Compensation & Hours

This position is a 37.5 hours per week position. Early morning and late evening hours are regularly necessary. Pay is commensurate with experience. Starting salary not to exceed $60,000.
