The Director, Membership Services is a senior level, exempt position responsible for driving membership growth and revenue. This at-will position will provide strategic leadership and planning as they relate to revenue strategies. The Director works closely with the President and CEO to ensure streamlined internal processes to acquire and retain members, meaningful member engagement, and financial sustainability through diversified income streams and partnerships within the community.
The position will help plan and attend a variety of Chamber events and meetings. This requires the Director, Operations and Membership, to be available to work on occasional evenings and weekends.
Roles and Responsibilities
Membership Recruitment and Sales
- Develop and implement creative strategies to recruit new members, targeting diverse businesses and sectors.
- In collaboration with the President & CEO, develop and implement a comprehensive and diverse portfolio of member benefits and services.
- Present information about the Chamber’s programs, policies, and benefits to non-members throughout San Mateo County, endeavoring to obtain their membership in the Chamber.
- Ensure new members are accurately represented in Chamber products and complete a success plan.
- Provide member orientations that demonstrate to new members the benefits, opportunities, discounts, and programs available through Chamber membership.
- Work with the President & CEO to create targeted outreach campaigns and promotional materials to drive membership growth.
Membership Retention and Engagement
- Lead a strategic membership growth and retention plan with short and long term targets.
- Keep current with members through new programs and methods of retention.
- Attend selected Chamber functions to highlight and champion member benefits.
- Develop, implement, and track a retention program for first-year members and develop similar strategies for multi-year members.
- Maintain and annually verify accurate member data and website/directory listings and create a comprehensive Chamber membership database.
- Execute personalized follow-ups and retention plans, particularly for first-year members.
- Be the staff liaison to the President & CEO for membership activities and strategies.
- In collaboration with the President & CEO, develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan to recruit new members, targeting diverse businesses and sectors.
- Actively and consistently work to sell Chamber memberships.
- Develop sales materials, competitive advertising rates, and handle contract renewals and billing.
- Develop, in collaboration with the President & CEO, a strategic funding plan to secure sponsorships/investments/program agreements for Chamber programs and events.
- Conduct revenue analysis and budgeting to inform decision-making and financial planning.
Event and Program Management
- Support major events such asassigned by the President and CEO.
- Assist in the development and execution of specialized programs to be determined.
- Participate in Chamber functions and represent the Chamber at member events.
Community Engagement and Outreach
- Represent the Chamber at business, civic, and networking events to promote visibility and partnership opportunities.
- Collaborate with community stakeholders and committees to align Chamber initiatives with regional needs and interests.
- Serve as a primary contact for Chamber members to enhance their experience and maximize their return on investment.
Marketing and Outreach
- Work with other Chamber staff to evaluate, create, and implement new programs/initiatives/opportunities in support of membership development and retention.
- Serve as operational lead in driving the development of Chamber marketing and branding strategies.
Team Membership
- As a senior position with the Chamber, mentor and support team members to promote leadership development and program success.
- Share professional development opportunities (e.g., W.A.C.E. webinars, ACCE workshops) to build staff capacity.
- Promote a high-performing, inclusive, and mission-driven team culture.
- Support other Chamber colleagues with a “Together, we can do this!” attitude and approach.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Nonprofit Management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in membership development, operational leadership, and/or revenue generation.
- Demonstrated success in selling advertising, sponsorships and/or similar fundraising initiatives.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with a collaborative leadership style.
- Experience in project management and cross-functional team coordination.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills. Ability to prepare and present information to community members, groups, potential and current Chamber members.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong data analysis and problem-solving abilities.
- Passion for community building and dedication to the Chamber’s mission.
Compensation and Benefits
Target Compensation if $70,000 base salary plus a generous compensation structure. The position is also eligible for an annual bonus.
- Full employee only premium for Anthem Blue Cross PPO Platinum Health, Vision, and Dental coverage as well as term life insurance. Benefits go into effect on the first of the month, 90 days after the hire date.
- Vacation and Sick leave accrual
- A matching retirement contribution into the 401(k) retirement plan after one year of service. Upon enrollment, the CHAMBER will make a 3% contribution.
- Cell phone allowance of $100 per month and mileage reimbursement.
- A wellness stipend of $150 per month.
- A generous paid holiday program that includes paid holidays from December 24 to December 31 st each year.
