Purpose Statement
Assist with the administration of medications under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
Essential Functions
- Ensure the well-being of patients and provide a positive, supportive, and structured environment under the direction of charge nurse or supervisor.
- Administer prescribed medications to patients according to established protocols and physician orders.
- Prepare and organize medication doses, including oral, topical, and other forms as directed.
- Ensure medications are stored and handled in accordance with safety guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Document patient interactions and report changes in patient conditions or behaviors by communicating with the team. Significant changes are reported to the nurse immediately.
- Document timely, accurate, and appropriate information in the patient medical record.
- Identify yourself to patients and visitors promptly and respond to patient requests quickly.
- Respond to distressed patients in a non-threatening manner and attempt to understand the source of distress.
- Apply de-escalation techniques to help manage patient’s emotions, behavior, and participation in treatment.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with patients, family members, guests, and other members of the healthcare team.
- Adhere to work schedule and overall attendance.
- Follow established policies, procedures, and standards for patient care.
- Stay informed about changes in medication practices and healthcare regulations.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development as required.
- Collaborate with other staff in working with the population of the facility to treat and rehabilitate.
- Demonstrate a positive, empathetic, and professional attitude towards customers at all times. When patient needs are not met, acknowledge and work to resolve complaints. Recognize that patient safety is a top priority.

Perform other functions and tasks as assigned.
Education/Experience/Skill Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a Medication Technician/Aide training program as required by the state in which the facility is located.
- Basic understanding of pharmacology and medication administration techniques.
- Previous experience in a behavioral health setting preferred.
- Knowledge and experience working with the population of the facility preferred.
Licenses/Designations/Certifications
- Certification as a Medication Technician/Aide, as required by the state in which the facility is located.
- CPR and de-escalation/restraint certification required (training available upon hire and offered by the facility).
- First aid may be required based on state or facility.
