Job summary

Self-Help For The Elderly in San Francisco, CA, is seeking a Regular Full-Time Medicare Advocate to counsel beneficiaries, provide information on Medicare options, and advocate on behalf of older adults and people with disabilities. Training on Medicare topics will be provided to enable HICAP counselor roles.

The role includes community outreach, education, and collaboration with colleagues, with travel as needed and strong client service skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training, plus two years in social services or health care.
• Must complete HICAP counselor training within 2 months of employment.
• Three or more years providing services in social services or health care.
• Knowledge of Medicare, Medi-Cal, Medigap, and health care delivery systems preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; group presentation experience.
• Bilingual in English and Chinese/Spanish/Russian/Vietnamese preferred.

Responsibilities

• Counseling: Provide individual counseling and information to Medicare beneficiaries and answer questions.
• Advocacy: Help clients uphold rights under Medicare and refer to legal services as needed.
• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate database records on clients and services.
• Community Outreach and Education: Attend events and present on HICAP services, Medicare options.
• Collaboration and Communications: Work with colleagues in a team environment.
• Attendance and Punctuality: Maintain reliable work schedule.
• Substitutes for volunteer counselors at counseling sites as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
