Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training with 2+ years in senior services or nonprofit setting.
• Must complete HICAP counselor training within 6–12 months of employment.
• Knowledge of Medicare, Medi‑Cal, Medigap and health‑care delivery systems preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; bilingual in English and Chinese/Spanish preferred.
• Self‑motivated, organized and able to multitask with minimal supervision.
• Ability to lift or pull up to 25 lbs; valid CA driver license and insurance required.
• Proficient with MS Office and the Internet.

Responsibilities

• Recruit, screen and train new volunteer counselors for San Mateo HICAP.
• Provide on-site observations and support to interns and counselors on Medicare topics.
• Maintain SHARP system data, create usernames and ensure CDA compliance.
• Coordinate volunteer events, update volunteer files and contact sites quarterly.
• Verify monthly counselor client intakes and follow up on missing entries.
• Assist in maintaining contact information and site agreements as needed.
