Performs various patient testing and administrative tasks supporting clinical activities at UNCHCS. Responsibilities include sections of the laboratory such as Central Processing, Bacteriology, and Special Microbiology (Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Sendouts). Tasks include specimen processing, Gram stains, rapid antigen testing (Cdiff, Strep, Legionella, Mono, Crypto), rapid molecular/PCR testing (RSV, Flu, Cdiff, COVID, Vaginitis Panel), operation of Total Lab Automation (BD Kiestra), plate reading, organism identification, susceptibility testing, and quality control of instruments and reagents.

Hours (other schedule options can be discussed at interview):

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 10:00am-8:30pm
  • OR 11:00am-9:30pm rotating weekends (every 4th) and holidays, Thursday-Sunday
  • OR Wednesday-Saturday: 10:00am or 11:00am start, 8:30pm or 9:30pm end, rotating holidays

Responsibilities:

  1. Investigate equipment, test results, specimens, and workflow issues.
  2. Participate in teams or special projects.
  3. Teach Clinical Laboratory Science students, Pathology residents, and train new employees; serve as a technical resource.
  4. Perform quality control and equipment maintenance.
  5. Conduct routine and specialized chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests; observe reactions and record data.
  6. Prepare specimens, reagents, solutions, heat, or filters as needed.
  7. Report results to healthcare providers and consult regarding test results.
  8. Review test results for accuracy and timely correction of errors.

Education Requirements: Bachelor's of Science degree; must meet eligibility to sit for MT exam within 12 months of hire.

Licensure/Certification Requirements: Certification within one year of becoming exam eligible.
