Summary

The Medical Supply Technician (MST) works within the Sterile Processing Service Line at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. The incumbent provides sterilization, preparation, supply items, and reusable medical equipment decontamination and distribution support for the facility.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed under specific circumstances as per VA policies.
• Experience and/or Education:
• Six months of experience demonstrating the ability to perform MST duties or an understanding of the work.
• Or one year of education above high school, including at least 6 semester hours in healthcare-related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, or surgical technician courses.
• Or a combination of experience and education that is equivalent for entry-level qualification.

Certification: None required.

Grandfathering Provision: Employees already employed in this occupation within VHA are considered to meet all basic requirements. Reassignments, promotions, or grade changes are permitted within the occupation under specified conditions.

Foreign Education: Education completed outside the U.S. must be evaluated by a recognized organization to be deemed equivalent to U.S. education.

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations

• GS-3 (Entry Level): Meets basic requirements only.
• GS-4 (Developmental Level): Six months of MST experience or two years of relevant education plus demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs).
• GS-5 (Developmental Level): One year of experience at the GS-4 level or a Bachelor's degree with relevant coursework, plus KSAs.
• GS-6 (Full Performance Level): One year of experience at GS-5 level, plus KSAs including knowledge of surgical instruments, sterilization principles, and ability to interpret instructions.

Preferred Experience: Education in Sterile Processing and Certification in Sterile Processing (VA-Level 2 or CRCST).

Physical Requirements: Physical tasks include walking, lifting, carrying, working in various environmental conditions, and handling items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Duties

• Receive contaminated medical equipment and determine appropriate cleaning and sterilization methods.
• Disassemble, inspect, and assemble equipment for sterilization, documenting processes.
• Perform operational checks on sterilization equipment.
• Work schedule varies with rotating weekends, to be discussed during interview.
