The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) position is in the Sterile Processing Service at the VA Bedford Healthcare System located at the Bedford, MA location. This position is full time at 40 hours per week.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• English Language Proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English.
• Experience and/or Education:
  • Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR
  • Education: One year above high school with at least 6 semester hours in healthcare-related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, or surgical technician courses; OR
  • Experience/Education Combination: An equivalent combination of experience and education qualifying for entry level.
• Foreign Education: Education completed outside the U.S. must be interpreted by a private organization and deemed equivalent to U.S. standards.

May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision if applicable.

Grade Determinations

Criteria for grade assignment include:

• GS-03: None beyond basic requirements.
• GS-04: Six months experience or two years of relevant education with 12 semester hours.
• GS-05: One year of experience or a Bachelor's degree with 12 semester hours in related courses.
• GS-06: One year of experience at GS-05 level, demonstrating knowledge of surgical instruments, sterilization, and safety precautions.

Physical Requirements

Work involves exposure to biohazards, chemicals, and medications, requiring safety precautions, PPE, and physical activity such as standing, walking, bending, lifting, and manipulating instruments. The environment may be noisy, hot, cold, and poorly lit, with potential hazards including burns, cuts, and exposure to body fluids. Proficiency in office and VA automated systems is required.
