Job description

Summary

The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) position is in the Sterile Processing Service at the VA Bedford Healthcare System located at the Bedford, MA campus. This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizen candidates are unavailable, in accordance with VA policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Experience and/or Education: Six months of experience demonstrating ability to perform the work or understanding of the work.
  • OR Education: One year above high school, including at least 6 semester hours in healthcare-related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, or surgical technician courses.
  • OR Experience/Education Combination: An equivalent combination of experience and education acceptable for entry-level qualification.
  • Foreign Education: Education completed outside the U.S. must be interpreted by a private organization specializing in foreign credentials and deemed equivalent to U.S. standards.
  • May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision if applicable.
Grade Determinations

Details the experience and education requirements for grades GS-03 through GS-06, including necessary KSAs such as knowledge of sterilization, medical terminology, and safety precautions.

Physical Requirements

Work involves exposure to biohazards, chemicals, and medications, requiring safety precautions, PPE, and physical stamina for standing, walking, bending, and lifting. Work environments may be hot, cold, drafty, or poorly lit, with potential hazards like burns, cuts, and exposure to body fluids and odors.

Duties
  • Provides sterilization, preparation, supply, and RME decontamination and distribution support.
  • Receives contaminated RME, disassembles, inspects, and determines appropriate cleaning and sterilization methods.
  • Prepares operating room case carts, organizes reprocessed items, and performs cleaning and sterilization tasks.
  • Operates sterilization equipment, documents processes, and maintains proper inventory and safety standards.
Work Schedule and Benefits
