Job Description

The Medical Records Coding Specialist will be responsible for:

  1. Abstracting, sequencing, and assigning diagnosis and procedure codes according to ICD-10-CM coding conventions and UHDDS definitions. Assigning CPT4 procedure codes following guidelines, and DRGs using specialized software. Generating coding worksheets and filing them as per hospital policy.
  2. Performing specialized coding, reviewing billing rejection audits, and addressing questions from the billing department.
  3. Maintaining current knowledge of regulatory and compliance issues related to coding, documentation, and billing.
  4. Communicating with physicians to clarify diagnoses and procedures.
  5. Following up on incomplete charts and conducting quality control audits.
  6. Assisting with coder education, training, and reviewing work of new coders for quality and accuracy.
  7. Providing leadership in decision-making and prioritization in the absence of the supervisor.
  8. Training new personnel in coding procedures.
Qualifications
  • Two years of occupationally specific education or an Associate's degree.
  • Four years of acute care hospital inpatient coding experience.
  • Current AHIMA certification as a CCS or RHIT with CCS.
  • This position is remote, with CA residents eligible to apply.
