Job description

Medical Records Inpatient Coding Specialist

Responsibilities include:

  1. Abstracting, sequencing, and assigning diagnosis and procedure codes according to ICD-10-CM coding conventions and UHDDS definitions.
  2. Assigning CPT4 procedure codes following guidelines, and DRGs using specialized software.
  3. Generating coding worksheets and filing them as per hospital policy.
  4. Performing specialized coding and assisting with billing rejection audits and questions.
  5. Maintaining current knowledge of coding, documentation, and billing regulations.
  6. Communicating with physicians for diagnosis/procedure clarification.
  7. Following up on incomplete charts and conducting quality audits.
  8. Assisting with coder training and reviewing work for quality and accuracy.
  9. Providing leadership and decision-making support in the absence of the supervisor.
  10. Training new personnel in coding procedures.

Qualifications:

  1. Two years of occupationally specific education or an Associate’s degree.
  2. Four years of inpatient coding experience in an acute care hospital.
  3. Current AHIMA certification as a CCS or RHIT with CCS.
