Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking a Laboratory Professional to perform a variety of clinical assays and related support duties in a hospital lab. The role includes instrument start-up, maintenance, troubleshooting, QC/QA, result reporting, and potential specialization in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology or Laboratory Support Services.

Coverage includes rotating weekends and holidays; phlebotomy may be required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of clinical tests and standards necessary to perform complex tests and accurately report results.
• Analytic ability to perform complex tests, interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instruments.
• Ability to concentrate for long periods, use good judgment, work under pressure to meet deadlines.
• Manual dexterity and acuity to prepare specimens and operate instrumentation and computers.
• Interpersonal verbal and written English language skills sufficient to exchange information with physicians and colleagues.
• Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.

Responsibilities

• Verify sample identification and order appropriateness according to procedures.
• Handle specimens per procedure and follow up on rejected samples.
• Prioritize work to meet turnaround times with minimal waste.
• Recognize abnormal results and consult with supervisor.
• Record results and report STAT and critical values per protocol.
• Perform QC/QA procedures and interpret results to identify out-of-control situations.
• Perform instrument surveys, maintenance, and documentation.
• Assist in teaching laboratory techniques to new staff and students.
• Contribute to resource optimization and inventory management.
