Job Description:

The Medical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for supporting pre-analytical and post-analytical functions within Essentia Health Laboratories. The MLA promotes patient safety by performing specimen collection and processing. Additionally, this role involves conducting waived lab testing in accordance with accreditation standards and state licensure requirements.

Education Qualifications:

Key Responsibilities:

1. Collect specimens via venipuncture or capillary skin puncture, as well as other miscellaneous specimens (urine, swabs, etc.).
2. Perform specimen processing and handling according to testing requirements to support clinical laboratory testing.
3. Conduct laboratory testing when applicable, adhering to accreditation and licensure standards.
4. Participate in training of new employees, students, and other personnel as appropriate.
5. Follow Essentia Health policies and procedures to ensure safety and quality in handling specimens and equipment.

Educational Requirements:

• Graduate from a Medical Laboratory Assistant Program.
• OR
• Complete an internal Medical Laboratory Assistant training program within 1 year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Assistant certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
• Recent experience in specimen preparation and processing.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and basic computer skills.
