Job Summary / Purpose

Works primarily in the lab specimen processing/intake department of the lab. Assists with specimen management and clerical duties as requested. May perform blood collection and specimen processing. If allowed by local/state regulations, may perform waived or moderately complex testing, if appropriate for the department organization.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

1. Practices positive patient identification at all times, in all job functions.
2. Practices kindness and courtesy with all patient and co-worker interactions. Establishes and maintains good communication within the department and with other hospital departments.
3. Takes responsibility for the department workflow, assists all team members to maintain efficiency, and fosters teamwork and collaboration.
4. Processes specimens into the lab, organizes for department distribution, and moves processed samples quickly to testing departments.
5. Handles laboratory send-out testing, including processing, organizing, packing lists, and packaging for external laboratories.
6. Uses good judgment in problem-solving and requests help when needed.
7. May perform phlebotomy following blood collection procedures, including venous and capillary punctures on all age groups, and blood bank collections. Uses appropriate techniques to obtain quality samples and adheres to volume requirements.
8. May assist with phlebotomy training under supervisor or coordinator guidance.
9. As allowed by local and state regulations, may perform CLIA waived and moderately complex tests following written policies and procedures. Evaluates and releases test results under the supervision of a Clinical Lab Scientist.
10. Performs routine maintenance on lab equipment and maintains records as trained.
11. Monitors department supply inventory, assists in stocking, and completes reagent logs.
