Job description

Job Overview:

The Medical Lab Technician (Transfusion) is responsible for performing and providing compatibility tests for patients' blood transfusion needs according to established standard operating procedures. They effectively manage and utilize the blood and blood product inventory. Additionally, they assist with the preparation and collection of quality control/assurance data reports and perform quality audits as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Associate Degree in an accredited Medical Technology program or related science
• Minimum of one (1) year of clinical lab experience or attendance at a school of Medical Technology

Preferred:

• American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification (ASCP) or equivalent certification

Scheduling Requirements:

• Weekend and Holiday rotation required

Essential Functions:

• Demonstrates flexibility and initiative on the job
• Performs all computer functions related to LIS and HIS programs for Transfusion Services, including receiving samples, result entry, and blood component tracking in BBLIS
• Performs and interprets quality control tests, reporting discrepancies to the supervisor
• Prepares blood components such as aliquoting Red Cells, thawing Plasma, pooling Cryoprecipitate, and preparing Platelets; irradiates and labels blood components correctly, ensuring minimal delay to patient care
• Handles patient samples properly, records results accurately, recognizes issues, and seeks assistance when needed; evaluates samples based on patient age
• Resolves patient sample identification errors within 10 minutes, records information appropriately, notifies nursing staff, and completes Event Reports
• Performs ABO/Rh, Direct Coombs, antibody screening, and compatibility tests accurately
• Maintains and expands knowledge through at least 12 hours of continuing education annually
• Practices safety and security as per hospital policies
• Understands and can interpret basic Blood Bank concepts, including blood group, Rh, antibody screening, and panels
• Evaluates results in the context of immune responses appropriate for different age groups
