Job Details

The Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technician (MLS/MLT) performs and monitors various medical laboratory analyses of patient specimens to provide accurate test results for confirming clinical diagnoses and treatment therapies. The MLS/MLT complies with regulatory requirements by following established procedures and protocols to maintain a safe laboratory environment and meet accreditation standards. They work effectively as a team member within the department and with other departments to provide quality service through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  1. Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  2. Properly process specimens following established protocols for proper patient identification and labelling. Specimen collection via phlebotomy and venipuncture may be required at specific hospital locations as needed.
  3. Determine acceptability of specimens by performing visual inspections, including acceptable QC recognition of abnormal/unusual results. Document unacceptable specimens according to policy. Communicate specimen requirements to appropriate personnel. Report, document, and communicate critical values per hospital policy.
  4. Complete reports and maintain records of test results by entering and verifying data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  5. Operate analytical equipment for laboratory tests. Monitor, clean, calibrate, and maintain devices according to specifications. Troubleshoot malfunctions and initiate corrective actions. Keep accurate records of all equipment checks and maintenance.
  6. Adhere to quality control policies to ensure accuracy and validity of results. Recognize factors affecting measurements and take appropriate actions. Follow QC protocols before releasing results. Document quality control results in compliance with regulations. Participate in proficiency testing programs.
  7. Maintain clinical competency by fulfilling regulatory requirements annually. Participate in hospital/laboratory in-services for education and accreditation compliance.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned, including technical education and training of other technicians and students as needed.
  9. Perform specimen collection via phlebotomy and venipuncture at specific locations as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Associate's Degree in a related Science field from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology or completion of Military Medical Laboratory Specialist Training. Prior training in a laboratory setting (student training accepted). ASCP or equivalent certification preferred.
