UPMC Hillman Cancer Center has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Medical Lab Scientist (Medical Technologist) or Medical Lab Technician to support our Washington, Steubenville, and St. Clair medical oncology offices. This patient-facing role allows you to utilize your phlebotomy and laboratory skills to make a meaningful difference in the lives of cancer patients. The position works Monday-Friday during daylight hours — no evenings, weekends, or holidays are required! You will be eligible for mileage reimbursement and float pay differential.

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title & salary based on their experience and education.

• Medical Lab Technician salaries start at $21.48 hourly with a sign-on bonus of $10,000!
• Medical Lab Scientist salaries start at $26.97 hourly with a sign-on bonus of $15,000!

Responsibilities:

1. Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries promptly. Practice pleasant communication both internally and externally.
2. Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and personnel policies. Follow procedures for specimen collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability. Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures accurately and efficiently according to protocols.
3. Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results; follow-up as per protocols. Identify factors affecting measurements and results, and initiate corrective actions. Troubleshoot instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results issues according to protocols.
4. Operate and maintain equipment within your training scope, perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Conduct minor repairs. Use reagents and supplies cost-effectively; monitor and maintain inventory.
5. Maintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, instruments, and physiological conditions affecting test results.
6. Assist with test development, methodology, and equipment evaluation, selection, and implementation.
7. Perform High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) independently.
8. Temporarily assume responsibility for supervision of the section/department as delegated.
9. Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as applicable and assigned.
