MedStar Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to join our team at MedStar Health Urgent Care! The ideal candidate will be a certified Medical Assistant with excellent customer service and patient interaction skills. Our Urgent Cares operate 7 days a week from 8AM to 8PM.
The Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative duties in a MedStar Urgent Care setting under supervision. Responsibilities include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measuring and documenting vital signs, assisting providers with exams, and providing telephone and clerical support. The position may involve floating to other sites within the system.

Primary Duties
- Assist providers with office procedures, patient preparation, examinations, and education. Support the clinical care team to ensure optimal patient flow and manage patient volume. Screen patients for preventative care, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns, and fall risks. Conduct surveillance for transitions of care, urgent/emergent care, or follow-up tasks. Conduct motivational interviews, including patient screening and coaching on disease management and community outreach. Identify behavioral health needs and notify providers.
- Report actual or potential problems concerning patients, families, and staff. Participate in performance improvement initiatives. Attend training for safety, infection control, etc. Maintain and audit logs, ensure medication supplies are current, check emergency equipment, and keep areas clutter-free. Engage in population management activities, including patient self-management support and care planning.
- Perform selected patient/laboratory testing, including Point of Care Testing, tuberculosis skin testing, ECG, pulmonary function tests, vision, and hearing testing. Remove sutures/staples, document activities in the EMR, and perform follow-up procedures such as pap smears, Pb levels, HIV testing, mammograms, and STD testing. Collect and process specimens, complete requisitions, and document accordingly.
- Provide escort/chaperoning, assist with discharge activities, and fulfill infection prevention responsibilities. Update records of equipment maintenance and manage supplies. Offer telephone screening to gather patient information, determine appropriate disposition, and document per protocols.
- May insert IV catheters for IV therapy or medication administration, and insert, remove, monitor urinary catheters. Prepare and administer oral drugs and injections (intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular). Perform phlebotomy as needed. Use EMR to propose medication refills, complete test requisitions, and coordinate insurance pre-authorizations for medications and referrals.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants within 1 year or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists within 1 year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Experience in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent
- Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting strongly preferred
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred
- Completion of externship at MedStar Health may substitute for experience
- For Cardiology offices: 6 months experience in an ambulatory care setting, or a related degree, or completion of a cardiac technician course
This position offers a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08.
