Georgia Department of Public Health is seeking a Medical Assistant II in the Augusta area to support clinical and laboratory workflows. Responsibilities

• Perform administrative and clinical duties, order labs via interface, and manage patient information in EHR.
• Carry out venipunctures and manage specimen labeling, processing, and shipping per guidelines.
• Conduct waived tests (HIV, Syphilis rapid tests, pregnancy tests) and newborn heel-sticks.
• Enter orders and results accurately into electronic systems; maintain supplies and logs.

Responsibilities

• Under general supervision performs administrative and clinical duties to include ordering lab tests via interface, entering and uploading patient information and documents in electronic health records.
• Perform venipunctures and collect specimens, label, process, and package specimens utilizing appropriate handling, packaging, and shipping guidelines required by reference labs.
• Conduct authorized point-of-care testing such as HIV and Syphilis Rapid testing, pregnancy tests and, additional waived testing. Perform newborn screening heel-sticks, and tuberculin skin testing after documented training and competency. Maintain clean instruments and work area.
• Follow standing orders and clinical protocol when providing laboratory services.
• Enters orders, results, services, and patient information accurately into electronic health record and laboratory systems.
• Maintain laboratory supplies, laboratory inventory, temperature logs, equipment records, and expiration date checks. Follow HIPAA, OSHA, CLIA, infection control, and bloodborne pathogen requirements. May participate in community outreach. Required to participate in emergency-response activities. Trains and precepts medical assistant and phlebotomy students, new employees, etc. May assist in providing laboratory coverage for South Augusta clinic.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor to maintain the integrity of laboratory processes and procedures

All East Central Health District 6 employees are deemed essential workers in the event of an emergency. As such, you may be called on to participate in an event including but not limited to: District wide Drills, staffing a shelter, working at a Specimen Point of Collection Site (SPOC) and/or working at a Point of Dispensing site (POD). If you are called on to participate, you are required to report to the designated site as a condition of employment, whether the emergency occurs during or outside regular work hours.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting program Associate degree or Medical Assistant Diploma
• Current CPR/BLS certification Competency in phlebotomy, specimen collection, infection control and electronic health records.
• Phlebotomy certification or the ability to obtain within 60 days of employment
• One to Two years of medical assisting experience preferred.
