Job Title: Medical Assistant - Extern

SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant extern will learn to provide exceptional and compassionate customer service to patients and visitors in a patient-centered medical home (PCMH) and will demonstrate NHC’s mission and values. To provide a seamless experience for patients, they must be able and willing to handle tasks within the clinic, according to established procedures and protocols. The Medical Assistant contributes to ensuring the delivery of quality care to patients in accordance with individual needs, physician orders, and standards of care.

Essential Job Duties. All duties should be performed side-by-side, in shadowing or observation, with a Certified Medical Assistant or provider.

  • Participates in pre-visit procedures, including scrubbing all patient charts for the day, verifying historical labs, updating lab results, obtaining medical records, and huddling with the provider.
  • Prepares exam rooms by setting up appropriate equipment according to visit type.
  • Greets and rooms patients in a professional and welcoming manner.
  • Performs patient work-up, including but not limited to: taking vital signs, gathering reason for visit, patient health history, demographic information, assisting patients with completion of screening questionnaires/forms, and assisting providers (physician, advance practice provider, clinical pharmacist) in performing medication reconciliation, and verifying allergies.
  • Addresses overdue health maintenance and gaps in care to assist in providing quality care and achieving quality metrics.
  • Prepares patients for examination, procedures, treatments, and minor office surgeries.
  • Assists the provider with in-office procedures.
  • Assists the provider with sterile procedures.
  • Observes and reports patients' signs or symptoms.
  • Communicates expected wait times to patients and providers, providing frequent updates.
  • Stocks, preps, and disinfects exam rooms in between visits.
  • Prepares instruments and equipment for autoclave after each use.
  • Inputs patient information into electronic health record (EHR) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Administers medications by unit or single dosage or by a dosage calculated and verified by a health care practitioner and limited to prescription medication, vaccines, and Schedule III-V controlled substances as authorized by a health care practitioner.
  • Administers intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections to patients of all ages.
  • Performs ordered EKGs and respiratory testing, as trained.
  • Instructs patients in proper technique to collect urine and fecal specimens.
  • Performs phlebotomy and capillary blood collection.
  • Prepares lab samples for testing. Determines acceptability of specimens and results. Repeats analysis as necessary to ensure accuracy.
  • Runs and handles quality control specimens on all CLIA waived Point of Care Testing (POCT) and procedures as required. Troubleshoot as necessary.
  • Runs, reports and results proficiency testing specimens in a timely fashion.
  • Conduct inventory of lab supplies, replenish supplies and discard containers.
  • Communicates information to patients according to protocols.
  • Provides patient education as appropriate to situation.
  • Provides patient with after-visit summary (AVS), verbally reviews the information, and ensures all questions are answered and next steps in care are understood.
  • Responds to emergency situations and contacts emergency services as directed by provider.
  • Disposes of biohazardous materials.
  • Practices standard precautions.
  • Actively and appropriately addresses in-basket messages in the EHR.
  • Verbatim transmitting of orders and instructions that have been issued and approved by the supervising physicians.
  • Telephone and in-person screening limited to intake and gathering of information without requiring the exercise of judgment based on clinical knowledge.
  • Schedules patient correctly through EHR and within provider guidelines.
  • Appropriately routes faxes, prescription refills, test result requests, and insurance inquires.
  • Conducts patient follow-up, including referral paperwork and assists patients in scheduling additional medical tests or appointments.
  • Scans and indexes documentation into EHR.
  • Maintains organized work area.
  • Participates in any applicable activities to help promote services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

  • This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • This position requires enrollment in an accredited medical assistant program.
  • Ability to fluently speak, read, and write in Spanish is highly preferred.

License and/or Certification Requirements

  • Active BLS certification is required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Behaviors

  • Ability to take and record vital signs and perform assigned CLIA waived lab tests.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to comply with all HIPAA, OSHA, and Neighborhood Health Center policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
  • Ability to multitask between front office and back-office duties.
  • Ability to answer and utilize multi-line telephone.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to changing information and/or policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to display sensitivity to the population and patients served.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a record of reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Working knowledge and proficiency of MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and desktop publishing software.
  • Ability to proficiently use EPIC Electronic Health Record.
  • Ability to enter in data accurately with attention to detail.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position is typically with a 40-hour per week, with hours that may vary.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic chemicals and bodily fluids.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud, based on patient volume.
  • As a result of high patient volume, this position experiences stressors that come along with a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to travel during the workday and/or cover at other locations as needed.

  • Repeat the same movements when entering data.
  • Speak clearly so listeners can understand.
  • Hear and understand the speech of another person.
