Summary Of Duties And Responsibilities
The Medical Assistant assists their assigned Providers with patient examinations, pre-visit questions, treatments, and procedures as directed by the Provider, while maintaining an efficient flow of patients through the clinic.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities
- Greet and welcome patients. Escort patients to the appropriate location for pre-examination information gathering.
- Inquire about self-referrals, recent ER visits or hospitalizations, and request reports from appropriate sources, documenting all in the EMR.
- Measure and record patient-specific information: height, weight, respiration, pulse, blood pressure, temperature, pulse oximetry (SpO2), and head circumference as appropriate. Record all measurements accurately in EMR.
- Document patient’s chief complaint in EMR.
- Administer medications and injections under provider’s directions and document in EMR.
- Review assigned Telephone Encounters within the EMR promptly.
- Administer immunizations under Provider’s direction, including providing Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) and follow-up. Update vaccine information in Oklahoma State Immunization Information System (OSIIS) and EMR.
- Prepare and restock supplies in examination rooms daily and prepare rooms for subsequent patients.
- Assist providers in physical exams and procedures as directed.
- Participate in training programs to improve patient care, including evidence-based practice approaches.
- Address the needs of patients and families, considering cultural sensitivity and utilizing effective communication skills.
- Dispose of contaminated items per Variety Care policy.
- Follow safety regulations (“Universal Precautions”), use appropriate PPE.
- Follow HIPAA guidelines and company policies on privacy and confidentiality.
- Comply with OSHA recommendations.
- Coordinate referrals outside of Variety Care, advise patients, and answer simple questions regarding referrals.
- Communicate with community organizations, health plans, facilities, and specialists to obtain test and referral results, conveying high-priority results to Provider promptly.
- Assist with medical emergencies as directed by Provider.
- Support the plan of care and patient education as per provider’s recommendations.
- Occasionally travel to other Variety Care health centers and provide backup coverage as directed; mileage reimbursed.
- Support accreditation as a Patient Centered Medical Home and contribute to healthcare reform goals (“Triple Aim”).
- Demonstrate personal character, integrity, adaptability, sound judgment, and responsibility.
- Function as a member of the emergency code team and understand crash cart/emergency kit use and restocking.
- Understand and perform tasks per the Medical Assistant competency checklist.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Lift at least 25 pounds.
- Assist patients onto and off exam tables when asked or directed.
Qualifications
Requirements, Skills, or Knowledge:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish).
- Proficiency in core competencies within 90 days.
- Complete CPR within 90 days.
- Ability to obtain and record accurate information.
- Willingness to learn EMR software.
- Intermediate computer skills, including data entry and typing.
- Ability to perform tasks, administer medications/injections, and understand lab instrumentation as directed within 90 days.
- Effective communication skills with diverse patient populations.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment.
- Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA and company policies.
Preferred:
- Previous medical assistant or clinic experience.
