Overview
This position is responsible for providing assistance to other members of the healthcare team to ensure efficient health services and smooth patient care flow. The Medical Assistant reports to the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN), Nurse Manager, and Director of Nursing (DON). Performs various entry-level tasks, introduces clients and their families into the healthcare system, and acts as a liaison between patients, families, and healthcare providers.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program.
- Current medical assistant certification preferred.
- At least 2 years of clinical experience in an outpatient/ambulatory setting.
- BLS certification required.
- Knowledge of medical procedures related to patient education and health practices.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
- Excellent phone etiquette.
Responsibilities
- Obtain and record patient's vital signs, height, weight, head circumference, and perform hearing and vision screenings.
- Obtain patient histories and health/developmental screens using assessment tools.
- Handle pre-authorizations and prior authorizations.
- Maintain order, readiness, and cleanliness of exam rooms per OSHA standards.
- Administer injections and medications as ordered by a provider.
- Perform routine venipuncture under provider supervision.
- Conduct CLIA-waived tests such as urine analysis, blood glucose, hematocrit, strep and flu screenings, urine pregnancy tests, gram stain, wet mount, OC culture, TB tine test, EKG, and Pap smear preparation.
- Prepare cultures for off-site testing and perform suture/staple removal as per provider orders.
- Ensure cleanliness and sterilization of equipment and instruments.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
- Maintain logs of lab results for Quality Assurance.
- Follow protocols for clinical measures in designated specialties.
- Understand and communicate rules, regulations, policies, and procedures at the client level.
- Be familiar with emergency procedures and participate in emergencies as needed.
- Help ensure OSHA and CLIA compliance.
- Participate in meetings, conferences, and in-service education to improve performance.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to implement improvements and foster positive relationships.
- Adhere to administrative and nursing policies, dress code, and maintain patient confidentiality.
