Job description

Townsen Memorial Surgery Center is looking for a Medical Assistant to join our team's Kingwood, TX location!

SUMMARY:

The Medical Assistant is responsible for a variety of patient care, technical, and clerical related functions. The Medical Assistant is responsible for the Surgery Center patient flow by assisting members of the care team and providing a broad range of health care services. The Medical Assistant offers exceptional patient service, both in person and over the phone. This position interviews patients, and obtains complete and accurate demographic, financial, and insurance information.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Medical Assistant
  1. Escort patients to exam rooms and prepare them for physical evaluations by obtaining vital signs.
  2. Conduct patient interviews to gather medical history, including past medical and surgical history, allergies, medications, and current conditions.
  3. Ensure all necessary paperwork is completed and attach demographic labels to charts.
  4. Review patient charts for completeness and accuracy, ensuring all relevant studies, diagnostics, and the most recent physician notes are included.
  5. Triage phone messages and respond appropriately.
  6. Keep the anesthesia doctor informed about upcoming procedures and surgeries, providing an updated schedule with doctors' names and surgery starting times.
  7. Assist nursing staff in confirming patient appointments and providing pre-op instructions.
  8. Conduct pre-admission interviews to obtain patient medical history, allergies, and medication details before pre-op.
  9. Direct patients to the pre-op area and provide instructions on necessary garment removal.
  10. Assist nursing staff with maintaining clinical areas by cleaning and restocking medical supplies.
  11. Respond to information requests, including sending faxes and emails.
  12. Ensure the availability of patient stretchers to maintain a smooth workflow.
Clinical Receptionist
  1. Assist in the daily management of clinic operations, ensuring the surgery center opens and closes on schedule.
  2. Greet patients upon arrival and provide them with necessary information.
  3. Assist patients in completing required forms and documentation.
  4. Verify the completeness and accuracy of patient records, including demographic details in the EMR system.
  5. Update patient information in the EMR system and related records.
  6. Maintain appointment schedules by notifying providers of patient arrivals.
  7. Answer and route phone calls appropriately, addressing inquiries as needed.
  8. Maintain accurate patient accounts by recording and updating personal and financial information.
  9. Call patients to confirm and remind them of upcoming appointments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Practices nursing within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act of Texas and accepts responsibility and accountability for own actions.
  2. Knowledge of vital sign monitor operation.
  3. Basic knowledge and understanding of nursing diagnosis.
  4. Knowledge of Principles of Standard Precautions.
  5. Knowledge of Nursing care for the post-surgical patient.
  6. Possesses appropriate communication skills to practice collaborative nursing.
  7. Ability to adapt to unexpected changes, effectively acclimate to various work schedules to achieve high quality of care.
  8. Ability to respond quickly, physically, and mentally when priorities and/or the patient’s condition changes.
  9. Ability to use a structured format for regular communication with patients and family.
  10. Ability to use downtime effectively, help and respond positively to request for assistance from team members.
  11. Compliance with facility policies and procedures.
  12. Compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Graduate of an accredited school and certification (CNA).
  2. One (1) year of experience in a clinical setting.
