Job summary

Ann Arbor Public Schools is seeking a part-time Media Center Assistant to support the school library and media center operations. The role pays $16.50 per hour and reports to the Building Administrator.

Key duties include unpacking and displaying new books and AV materials, ordering for preview, tracking locations with a computer database, and maintaining library records. The candidate will assist staff and students and manage inventory of books and media equipment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2–4 years of library experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with common software tools and basic computer operations expected.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 – 4 years of library experience
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Unpack and display new books, AV materials, magazines and hardware.
  • Order books for preview.
  • Track locations of books and maintain a computer database for such.
  • Maintain master card file for books and audio visual equipment.
  • Send magazines to Media Specialist each month.
  • Maintain and use card productions computer program.
  • Maintain and use Bibliofile computer program.
  • Maintain and repair inventory of books.
  • Assist staff and students in media center.
  • Reserve electronic equipment and maintain inventory for staff.
  • Organize elementary book reviews.
  • Process overdue fine reminders.
  • Maintain teacher/student patron database.
  • Assist in the cataloging of all instructional resources.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Write simple correspondence.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, staff and parents.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages.
  • Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
  • Operate personal computer at an intermediate level as well as operate various programs, such as Word, Excel, FileMaker Pro and internet.
  • Work with media equipment such as video, laminating machine and fax and typewriters.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; repeat the same hand, arm or finger motion to operate computers or laminating machine; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand or walk. The employee must frequently push or pull up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds such as TV/VCR carts and boxes of books. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to tell differences among colors.
