Job summary

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Building Administrator (duties also assigned by building librarian)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 – 4 years of library experience
An ideal candidate will:
  • Have the ability to switch from task to task and refocus

  • Love libraries, books, information, and learning
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbal land written

  • Be able to take directions, as well as work independently
  • Have experience working or volunteering in a library and knowledge of standard library functions and procedures (or be a frequent user of a library)
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technology that facilitates access to library resources and management materials
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

For all libraries

  • Greeting students, teachers, visitors with a positive and open mind
  • Exhibiting enthusiasm for the many aspects of the work and actively develop an atmosphere of teamwork
  • Remaining mindful of the operations of the library and pitches in where necessary
  • Seeking input or ideas from the librarian for improvement of library functions when tasks are unclear
  • Answering reference questions and assisting students and staff in locating library materials, using the library catalog, and using online databases
  • Assisting with computer/equipment circulation
  • Stays current with the latest information technology in order to facilitate student and teacher access to resources and library program.
  • Assisting students and staff with computer and technology equipment
  • Overseeing student sign-in
  • Checking in and shelving materials
  • Collecting lost library book fines and updating student library records
  • Checking out library materials
  • Updating library catalog as requested by the librarian
  • Preparing library materials for circulation--e.g. reconciling invoices, cataloging, stamping, covering, and labeling books and other items
  • Mending damaged or worn materials and equipment
  • Conducting inventory as directed by the librarian
  • Conducting shelf reading
  • Cleaning computers as needed
  • Cleaning/dusting library bookshelves and tables as necessary
  • Answering library phone, taking messages, and retrieving messages.
  • Building specific as directed by the librarian: Assisting teachers and students with printers/copiers, entering Help Tickets for machine repair or issues, decorating bulletin boards and other areas of the library, operate and change laminator as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by the librarian
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Write simple correspondence.
  • Effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to students, staff and parents.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages.
  • Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
  • Operate personal computer at an intermediate level as well as operate various programs, such as Word, Excel, FileMaker Pro and internet.
  • Work with media equipment such as video, laminating machine and fax and typewriters.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; repeat the same hand, arm or finger motion to operate computers or laminating machine; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand or walk. The employee must frequently push or pull up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds such as TV/VCR carts and boxes of books. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to tell differences among colors.
