Kids for the Future in Alpena, MI seeks an Instructional Assistant to support the Thunder Bay Jr. High library/media center. You will assist in circulation, cataloging, inventory, and in delivering resources to students and teachers.
Responsibilities include coordinating with teachers, guiding small groups, prepping materials for events, and helping with research activities while maintaining accurate records and using standard office software.
SUMMARY : To assist in the development of and to provide an enriched library/media center environment containing a wide variety of material which will foster intellectual growth, to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media resources.
This position is open for 5 days of internal bidding after which it will then be posted externally (EOD August 31st, 2026).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
Apply established procedures on operation of electronic circulation and card catalog system.
Perform clerical duties as necessary.
Communicate with teachers and coordinates lessons.
Work with small groups of students.
Work with class groups of children.
Aid in research on topical issues.
Stay knowledgeable about media collection.
Promote print/non-print media for areas of research.
Assist in the physical moving and relocation of materials, furniture and equipment.
Do several tasks at once.
Interact with computer using word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.
Process orders, balance media center budgets, and shelve books.
Write notes/letters to staff, parents, and publishers.
Assist with hall monitoring when library is vacant in a.m. - lunches - p.m.
Assist teachers when needed with material or student needs (i.e. reading of tests to students, delivery of technology, Ellison work, etc.)
Assist with other IA assignments (LRE, Overload, Lunchroom, etc.) when necessary.
Assist with standardized testing, as needed, including make-up (NWEA, MSTEP, etc.)
Keep accurate inventory of library materials, including all technology.
Setup technology for Media Center events, including staff meetings, professional development, and others.
Coordinate and/or assist with special events in the library, including book fairs, showcases of student work, and others.
Reviews email communications regularly and responds as needed.
Regular and reliable attendance.
Follow all Board policies and district procedures.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises students and parent volunteers.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Must meet NCLB standards as follows: Associates degree, 60 semester hours of college credit or passage of state requirements for paraprofessionals. Passage of the Library/Media test administered by the Human Resources Office. Six to twelve months of library/media related experience and/or training preferred. Must be able to successfully show minimum reading, writing, and mathematics competency.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and classroom situations to students, parents, and/or staff.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to operate computers using Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and other various applications. Ability to use electronic research databases and school networked toolkits. Ability to use projectors, photocopy machines, and possess basic computer troubleshooting skills. Prefer knowledge of Bright Resource by Lumen Touch. Ability to assume responsibility for supervising students and understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
