Technical Solutions Inc. is currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Department Manager for our client, to lead their Pittsburgh-based mechanical engineering team with a focus on industrial piping systems. This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned engineering leader who combines strong technical expertise with a passion for team development, project execution, and business growth.

As part of a multidisciplinary engineering and construction services organization, you will work with clients across a wide range of industries, including metals, chemical, industrial manufacturing, automotive, food processing, municipal, and environmental sectors. You will play a key role in shaping the future of our mechanical department while delivering innovative solutions for complex heavy industrial projects.

Leadership & Department Management:

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers and designers.
• Plan and allocate resources across multiple projects and proposals.
• Conduct performance reviews and support employee development initiatives.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to establish departmental goals, strategy, and growth plans.
• Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Project & Business Leadership:

• Oversee the successful execution of engineering services for multiple projects.
• Develop engineering estimates and contribute to proposal development efforts.
• Coordinate project schedules, staffing plans, and resource requirements.
• Monitor project budgets, labor utilization, and departmental performance.
• Support business development activities and strengthen relationships with existing and prospective clients.

Technical Excellence:

• Lead the design and modification of industrial piping and mechanical systems.
• Develop and review process flow diagrams, P&IDs, and facility layouts.
• Review and approve engineering drawings, 3D models, equipment specifications, and piping designs.
• Provide technical guidance to engineering and CAD teams.
• Conduct engineering reviews to ensure quality, compliance, and best practices.
• Promote technical innovation, training, and process improvements.

Qualifications:

• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Pennsylvania or another U.S. state preferred
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 15+ years of engineering experience in industrial environments.
• 5+ years of leadership or management experience.
• Strong background in industrial piping system design and analysis.
• Experience leading projects from conceptual design through detailed engineering and execution.
• Working knowledge of 3D CAD systems.

Technical Expertise:

Familiarity with engineering software such as:

• Pipe-Flo
• AFT Fathom

Strong knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including:

• ASME
• NFPA
• API

Experience within heavy industrial sectors such as metals, chemical processing, manufacturing, energy or related industries
