Job summary

SmithGroup's Washington, DC office is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern for summer 2027. You will join integrated design teams, assist in HVAC, plumbing and/or fire protection design in Revit, and perform load calculations using Trane Trace or IESVE.

Ideal candidates are sophomores or graduate students in mechanical or architectural engineering, with some experience in Revit, Trane Trace/IESVE, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

Qualifications

• Sophomore year or graduate standing in an accredited mechanical or architectural engineering program.
• Some experience with Revit, Trane Trace and/or IESVE, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

• Work on integrated architecture and engineering project design teams.
• Assist in the design of HVAC, plumbing and/or fire protection systems in Revit 3D modeling software.
• Perform heating and cooling load calculations using Trane Trace and/or IESVE.
• Calculate pressure drop and static pressure for air and hydronic systems.
• Participate in design meetings and receive mentorship from engineers.

The Washington, DC office of SmithGroup is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our team for summer 2027.

Working with us, you will:

• Work on integrated architecture and engineering project design teams.
• Assist in the design of HVAC, plumbing and/or fire protection systems in Revit 3D modeling software.
• Perform heating and cooling load calculations using Trane Trace and/or IESVE.
• Calculate pressure drop and static pressure for air and hydronic systems.
• Participate in design meetings.
• Receive mentorship from experienced engineers.
• Visit a construction site(s) and/or completed project sites.

An ideal candidate has:

• Completed at least their sophomore year or have graduate standing in an accredited mechanical or architectural engineering program by the time of the internship.
• Some experience with Revit, Trane Trace and/or IESVE, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

SmithGroup's internship program provides students with the opportunity to apply both classroom learning and past experience to real world application. Interns will participate in hands-on project work, site visits as possible, "Lunch & Learn" sessions with office leadership, office activities, and mentor pairing.

SmithGroup promotes a healthy work/life balance for our staff, as well as a hybrid work model of at least three days working within our vibrant office culture and the option to work remote the rest of the week. The anticipated hourly rate for this position is $23.56 to $26.00 per hour, at the time of posting. You are eligible to receive overtime pay for hours worked beyond 40 in a work week.
