Job summary

SmithGroup Detroit is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern for a 12-week summer program in Detroit. The role involves supporting design teams on HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems using Revit, Trane Trace, and IESVE, with mentorship from seasoned engineers.

The internship offers hybrid work options, an anticipated hourly rate of $26.00–$27.00 and opportunities to visit project sites. Applications are encouraged as internships fill quickly.

Qualifications

• Must be a current student in an accredited mechanical or architectural engineering program (sophomore year or graduate standing).
• Some experience with Revit, Trane Trace and/or IESVE, and MS Office Suite is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Work on integrated architecture and engineering project design teams.
• Assist in the design of HVAC, plumbing and/or fire protection systems in Revit 3D modeling software.
• Perform heating and cooling load calculations using Trane Trace and/or IESVE.
• Calculate pressure drop and static pressure for air and hydronic systems.
• Participate in design meetings.
• Receive mentorship from experienced engineers.
• Visit construction sites or completed project sites.

Working with us, you will:

• Work on integrated architecture and engineering project design teams.
• Assist in the design of HVAC, plumbing and/or fire protection systems in Revit 3D modeling software.

An ideal candidate has:

• Completed at least their sophomore year or have graduate standing in an accredited mechanical or architectural engineering program by the time of the internship.
• Some experience with Revit, Trane Trace and/or IESVE, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

The anticipated hourly rate for this position is $26.00 to $27.00per hour, at the time of posting. You are eligible to receive overtime pay for hours worked beyond 40 in a work week.
