Job summary

Legrand, in St. Louis, MO, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for the OCL Architectural Lighting Team.

You will develop high-quality luminaire designs from concept through production and enable configurable product families. As part of the OCL team, you will contribute to product development, manufacturing design, and continuous improvement, ensuring quality, efficiency, and cost effectiveness across the product lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering required.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and mechanical design.
  • Experience with DFMA and design for manufacturing.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • DFM/DFM improvements to reduce costs and improve quality; increase manufacturing capacity.
  • Update and enhance products in collaboration with sales/marketing.
  • Create and maintain 3D models, layouts, drawings, and assembly instructions using SolidWorks/EPDM.
  • Develop modified and custom products for customers; prepare BOMs and production docs.
  • Support cost estimating, ECN procedures, and project documentation.

At a Glance

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join the OCL Architectural Lighting Team in St. Louis, MO. The Mechanical Engineer will develop high quality market differentiated luminaire designs. This individual will be responsible for new product development from concept through production and must be able to design highly configurable product families that are uncompromising in quality and performance yet cost effective and simple to assemble, install, and maintain.

Job Description

As part of the OCL team, you will contribute to product development, manufacturing design, and continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring quality, efficiency, and cost effectiveness across the product lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • DFM: Cost savings, increasing manufacturing capacity, and solutions to address Non‑Conforming Materials (NCM).
  • Product Enhancements: Product updates to better serve customers’ needs, meeting current and future technology. Working with sales and marketing to determine which products are worthy of a design update.
  • Solidworks CAD software: Provide support to engineering by creating and maintaining 3D solid models for parts and assemblies, layouts, detail drawings, assembly drawings, sketches, instructions & diagrams for jobs and projects as well as theoretical and physical testing analysis of design and environmental testing.
  • Modified and Custom: Create, detail, process and assist in the construction of modified and custom products for customers.
Existing Product Improvement (Sustaining Engineering Changes)
  • Work closely with operations and manufacturing to investigate and research possible Design For Manufacturing (DFM) / Design For Assembly (DFA) and process enhancements to improve quality, efficiency and/or lower costs.
  • Concept, prototype, test and review changes and improvements with team.
  • Design review during development stage, and production release.
  • Assure that design, sales, marketing, purchasing and production inputs are considered before proceeding with change.
  • Creation and standardization of Bill of Materials (BOM) for existing product.
  • Creation and standardization of Engineering Change Notice (ECN) procedure. This information should include any deviation from the original BOM.
  • Verification (sign off) of all documentation relating to the product change before production phase.
  • Modified and Custom Product Development.
  • Assist sales with specification and quotation information for modification or custom designs.
  • Creation of estimated Cost Of Goods Sold (COGS) documentation for modification or custom designs.
  • Creation of Submittal and/or Approval drawings for modification or custom designs.
  • All design work and documentation to be done using Solidworks and EPDM.
  • Assure that the customer is getting what they have ordered and are expecting.
  • As required, plan and direct construction of mock‑ups or prototypes.
  • Creation of BOM and Production Order (PO) for all components that will go into an assembled product and it will show each quantity required to make one assembly. These components will include subassemblies, purchased parts, manufactured parts, and raw materials. The BOM/PO shall also include the estimated time required for fabrication and assembly.
  • As required, monitor progress of development project and compare actual costs with estimates.
  • As required, assume project management role and direct development and implementation of a project plan including estimated requirements for resources‑management, labor, materials and time required.
  • As required, assess vendors for competence, capabilities and resources.
  • As required, assigned as point‑of‑contact for specific areas of expertise.
Drafting
  • Prepare design specification, analysis, and recommendations for presentation and approval.
  • Generating 3‑D model assemblies, mechanical assemblies, detail drawings, customer drawings, and assembly/installation instruction sheets.
  • Create and modify detailed drawings from sketches, architectural plans, layouts, or notes.
  • Process job packages to production.
  • Update existing designs and drawings.
  • Support other departments with illustrations, rendered models, and other documents as requested.
Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
  • Proficient in Solidworks and mechanical design; proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Team player mentality with excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Highly motivated and able to work in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Knowledge of project management and stage‑gate methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of DFMA.
