Job summary

Electric Machinery Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota is seeking a Mechanical Engineer in the Engineering Department to drive product design specifications for motors, generators and magnetic drives.

You will support orders from the proposal phase through design, development, manufacturing, testing, and field service, working with a cross-functional team to apply best practices and improve machine performance.

Qualifications

  • BS Mechanical Engineering degree required; machine design emphasis preferred.
  • 2-3+ years of design or development experience with large motors and/or generators or equivalent complexity.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and MS Office; strong mechanical analysis background.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain design standards and analysis methods to reduce lead times.
  • Manage project plans for product development in line with company strategy.
  • Provide technical input for financial and capital planning; supervise engineers and drafting staff if assigned.
  • Review customer specifications and advise on machine design; visit customer sites to optimize performance.
  • Lead standardized models to reduce cost and time; support other departments with engineering expertise.

POSITION: Mechanical Engineer

DEPARTMENT: Engineering Department

Primary Objective of Position:

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for high-level of execution of product design that specifies "what" is required (materials, tolerances, limits, etc.) on the product line documentation, that includes motors, generators and magnetic drives. Supports customer orders from the proposal phase through the design, development, manufacturing, testing, and field service/aftermarket phases. The Mechanical Engineer works in a team environment to insure collaboration and sharing of best mechanical engineering practices within the WEG Company.

Major Areas of Accountability:
  • Develops and maintains Design Standards to govern the conventional and computerized mechanical design analysis methods, and facilitates the design process reducing design lead times.
  • Actively manages project plans for product development consistent with the overall company strategic plan driving them to completion.
  • Provides input to management for financial planning, capital planning, and product development.
  • May supervise work activities of the engineers, drafters, and other support personnel assigned to the project. Orient, motivate, define design objectives and delegate work.
  • Reviews customer's specification and offer technical advice. Visit customer sites to determine how to best apply machine design technology and improve machine performance.
  • Directs standardized models that substantially reduce design cost and time for products and systems.
  • Provides technical and engineering support to other departments.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • BS Mechanical Engineering degree required; machine design emphasis preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 - 3+ years' experience in the design or development of large motors and/or generators, or equal level of product complexity.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project.
  • Strong design background involving mechanical structural analysis, thermal analysis using both conventional and computerized (ANSYS and CFX) mechanical design analysis methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, evaluate, and solve complex issues of technical content with guidance and technical support.
  • Communicate and interact effectively across all levels of the organization and customers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Self-starting, results-oriented, flexible, and team player.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to lead and interact with teams to obtain consensus, and as an individual contributor.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively manage completion of assignments through appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to adhere to a work schedule that may require travel, including domestic and international travel.
Physical Requirements:

Physical ability to travel freely within manufacturing and office facilities. This requires climbing stairs and moving over, around, and about shop machinery. Have the physical ability to lift and carry up to 45 pounds unassisted.

Salary:

$70k to $80k

Will compensate with experience. Position is full-time.
