Job summary

Oil States Industries, Inc. seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer III to become a subject matter expert in CAE/FEA for offshore riser components and hang-off systems, working with operations, manufacturing engineering, quality and project management.

You will perform model setup, run FEA, interpret results, and suggest design improvements; lead prototypes, interface with customers and certifying authorities, and mentor teammates.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 4+ years of direct experience.
• Advanced experience with FEA and proficiency in Abaqus and SolidWorks Simulation.
• Applied theory in designing with elastomeric materials.
• Strong data analysis, organizational and communication skills.
• 5–10% travel, including international travel.

Oil States is currently looking for qualified candidates for the position of Mechanical Design Engineer III.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Without supervision, become a subject matter expert (SME) in an assigned specialty to support new and existing projects. Products include laminated elastomer bearing based components for offshore riser and tendon connections as well as hang-off systems for offshore riser components. Requires closely partnering with operations, manufacturing engineering, quality and project management. Some interface with Customers, certifying authorities and material/outside fabrication vendors also required.

ENGINEERING DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• As a CAE/FEA SME, a thorough knowledge of a particular code (ABAQUS, SolidWorks Simulation or other Numerical Analysis software) is required, and must be capable of independently performing the following tasks:
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the associated industry standards, in-house codes and engineering principles that govern the design of assigned product lines
  • Interpret Customer supplied loading conditions and project analysis output requirements, assuring they align with both OSI and industry accepted practices
  • Set up a model and associated boundary conditions and troubleshoot convergence and modeling approach issues
  • Run and interpret the results from FEA to verify component structural and thermal performance, recognize erroneous output or structurally problematic areas and recommend modeling and design solutions
• Other responsibilities may include:
  • Lead research and development projects in terms of new products and materials
  • Lead the design, construction and testing of prototypes to confirm new designs and materials
  • Direct interface with Customers and Certifying Authorities, justifying our products meet project/industry standard requirements
  • Mentor less experienced team members
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree with at least 4 years of direct experience; BS in Mechanical Engineering or related degree with at least 5 years of direct experience
• Advanced experience with FEA, including advanced level of proficiency using SIMULIA Abaqus, SolidWorks Simulation or other Numerical Analysis software
• Applied theory in designing with elastomeric materials
• Advanced level of experience with data analysisExcellent organizational skills
• Detail-focused and results-oriented attitude with a sense of urgency
• Handle multiple tasks at one time
• Excellent written and oral communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
• 5% to 10% travel required, including international travel

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Office environment – prolonged sitting, use of a computer, telephone and other office equipment
• Frequent standing, walking, climbing stairs
• Lifting up to 10 pounds occasionally
