Responsibilities

  • Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles, perform minor mechanical repairs and assist other mechanics in completing major repairs.
  • Weld and perform minor body work.
  • Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule: rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain fluid levels.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including bleeding of air tanks on shop equipment according to schedules.
  • Maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance and time and materials for repairs and service.
  • Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, lights and service as needed.
  • Operate buses and other vehicles as needed, including transporting students.
  • Follow safety procedures for shop equipment and work area.
  • Attend required training to maintain safety certification.

POSITION TITLE: Mechanic

EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-exempt

REPORTS TO: Service Manager

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months

HOURLY SALARY RANGE:Minimum $21.57 , Midpoint $25.99, Maximum $30.41

Primary Purpose:

Perform mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of vehicles.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification

High School Diploma or GED

Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with all school bus driving endorsements

Bus Driver Certification

Special Knowledge/Skills

Ability to diagnose mechanical problems, perform repairs with general supervision, and operate repair equipment

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Maintenance and Repair

  • Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles, perform minor mechanical repairs and assist other mechanics in completing major repairs.
  • Weld and perform minor body work.

Safety

  • Operate buses and other vehicles as needed, including transporting students.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are in safe operating condition and follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as: first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and immediately inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along the route.

Communication

  • Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
  • Foster good school/community relations and good relations among all school employees.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
  • Participate in professional learning, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repair equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack and lift equipment, school bus and vehicles; safety equipment such as flares, reflective signs, fire extinguisher; two-way radio; computer
