JOB TITLE/DEPARTMENT: Mechanic I

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

PAY GRADE: Aux 7

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Mechanic I-Transportation is responsible for performing preventive maintenance and inspections to District fleet vehicles and equipment, including school buses, white fleet, trailers, light duty equipment, and generators under the guidance of Mechanic IIs, Mechanic IIIs, and Shop Supervisors.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum one (1) year auto/truck maintenance and repair experience.

Ongoing and/or Annual Requirements:

  • Pass and maintain a Texas Department of Public Safety school bus driver physical prior to employment and annually throughout employment.
  • Obtain and maintain a CDL class A or B with "P" and "S" endorsements.
  • Hold and maintain acceptable driving record (as defined by the Texas Department of Public Safety under the School Bus Driver Penalty Point System) annually throughout employment.
  • Pass drug and alcohol testing as required under the federal Department of Transportation drug testing program to include pre-employment, random, post-accident, and all other types of drug and/or alcohol testing included under the program.

Preferred:

  • ASE/TASBT certified.
Special Knowledge / Skills
  • Knowledgeable on the mechanical abilities to make repairs.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
  • Have basic knowledge of engines, transmissions, and hydraulics.
  • Ability to work irregular hours as needed.
  • Ability to drive a school bus safely.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Work with direction and independently to complete assigned tasks.
  • Assist technicians with vehicle repairs.
  • Perform light vehicle repairs, including safety equipment, lights, tires, glass, seats, and electrical accessories.
  • Perform facility cleaning/upkeep tasks, including fueling, trash collection, sweeping, mopping, stocking, etc. as required.
  • Perform preventative maintenance checks and analysis.
  • Assist with vehicle road calls and vehicle accidents as required/directed.Drive bus routes, in emergency situations, if needed.
  • Participate in annual industry-related professional development as required/directed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions required the following physical demands: Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts; work in various temperature and weather conditions; and to walk, stand, climb, carry, stoop, bend, kneel, and reach. Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Exposed to dampness and humidity, chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel. Environmental Conditions: Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes.
