Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Help mechanics repair and maintain all vehicles. Carry out assigned duties to ensure all vehicles and equipment are safely maintained.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or Regional Accrediting Agency)
  • Valid Texas driver’s license (B-CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsement
  • Bus Driver Certification from TEA
  • Must have a safe driving record verified by TEA Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility)
  • Shall be subject to testing for use of alcohol or controlled substance that violate law or federal regulations
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check; non‑refundable fee (approximately $50) paid by employee

Experience Required:

Minimum of one (1) year experience in minor vehicle repair and maintenance

Knowledge/Skills:

Organization Management
  • Perform mechanical repairs or work under supervision of a mechanic to repair or replace tires, bulbs, fluids and accessories.
  • Disassemble simple components and clean parts for reassembly.
  • Request parts and tools for mechanics as needed.
  • Check fluid levels and replace oil, water, battery, and other fluids as needed.
  • Help maintain accurate, updated records of preventive and routine maintenance.
  • Inspect, repair, change, and rotate tires.
  • Clean shop floors, stalls, driveways, tools, and equipment.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
Vehicle Operations
  • Operate buses and district vehicles as needed, including driving buses into shop area for work, driving routes and field trips.

  • Attend any specified meetings or professional development to improve job performance.
Qualities of an Effective Mechanic Helper
  • Shall comply with District policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Shall comply with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, or standards.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Equipment

Telephone, two‑way radio, automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repair equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air‑powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks and lift equipment. School bus and district vehicles.

Working Conditions
  • Work irregular hours and respond to after‑hour emergency calls as needed.
  • Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Work outside and inside, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts.
  • Exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust and vehicle fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
  • Work prolonged or irregular and extended work hours to include holidays and weekends.
  • Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing and pulling.
  • Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching.
  • Limited light lifting and carrying on a daily basis.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • District wide and statewide travel.
