Job summary

San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District Transportation Department is seeking a Lead Mechanic to supervise on-site vehicle mechanics and perform major repairs to ensure safety and reliability of district vehicles. The role requires Master ASE for school bus and a Texas CDL with P and S endorsements; 3+ years of mechanic experience is expected.

Job Description

JOB TITLE: Lead Mechanic WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

(Master ASE Certified)

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

DEPT. /SCHOOL: Transportation DATE REVISED: January 2024

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Responsible for on-site leadership of vehicle mechanics. Perform major mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements

Master ASE Certified for school bus

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engine maintenance and repair
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to access and use service materials
  • Ability to operate bus
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others
  • Texas School Bus Driver Certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam

Experience:

Three years experience as a mechanic

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision. Maintain accurate, up-to-date preventative maintenance records.
  • Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems, including engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical, and cooling systems.
  • Estimate time and materials required to perform major repairs.
  • Assist the Shop Foreman with assigning work to vehicle mechanics and mechanic assistants and inspect completed work for quality.
  • Help train mechanics and mechanic assistants.
Safety:
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are in safe operating condition.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Other:
  • Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
  • Operate buses and vehicles as needed.
  • Respond to after-hours road calls as needed.Comply with all federal, state, and district policies and procedures.
  • Attend professional development training and possess or earn ASE certification.
  • Perform other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitor and direct the work of mechanics and mechanic assistants.

Equipment Used:

Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles.

Posture

Prolonged sitting; frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

Motion

Frequent walking; regular grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and reaching; regular driving.

Lifting

Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) daily.

Environment

Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, and vibration; exposure to chemical hazards; work around vehicles and machinery with moving parts; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent district wide travel; School district employees may be required to work from home and use their personal electronic devices.
